Manchester United should change the usual transfer narrative with Thiago

Manchester United were still excited by the surprise news from Donny van de Beek when rumors of a possible raid for Thiago Alcantara returned.

The prospect of a Dutch supreme and a Spanish superstar arriving at Old Trafford this summer had fans dreaming of what it could be.

However, the truth about those risen Thiago rumors could be the usual story when it comes to United and many of the players they have been associated with in the past.

The United name is often added to the mix when rival agents or clubs want to force another’s hand.

Sometimes it is to get an improved contract at your current club. At other times it is simply to arouse interest.

And, as seems to be the case with Thiago, it is to scare Liverpool into action.

German publication Bild claims United are trying to take advantage of Liverpool’s distraction by opening talks with the Spanish international’s agents. But there is a problem.

Yes, Thiago is one of the best midfielders in Europe who has just inspired his team to the glory of the Champions League. And of course United should be looking at it given its £ 26 million price tag.

However, the imminent arrival of Van De Beek means that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already has a multitude of options in midfield.

Joining the Dutchman are Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scot McTominay. Then there’s the next generation, with high expectations from Hannibal Mejbri, James Garner, and Dylan Levitt later on.

Is United really interested in adding another to that combination? Or is your name just getting out because it’s so prevalent?

Twisting the transference narrative

If you had asked United fans where they needed to get stronger a few weeks ago, most would have said they were center-back, right-back and forward. Not many would have said midfield. And yet now, with Van De Beek almost here, the fans want Thiago too.

That says a lot about their quality and while United already has the numbers, this should be a case where Ed Woodward is turning a potentially false story upside down.

United may not have thought of Thiago until he was used to force Liverpool’s hand. But now they certainly should be.

In fact, they should jump in and turn probable fiction into exciting reality.

Most of the time, when United is used as fuel for the transfer fire, the player in question is unreachable.

That’s not the case for a £ 26m Thiago who could be the bargain of the summer despite United’s already impressive midfield options.
