Manchester United are at risk of missing Mauricio Pochettino if he does not act soon, with mounting pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sportsmail understands there would be significant support from inside the United locker room for former Tottenham manager Pochettino to take over if it is decided that Solskjaer’s reign must come to an end.

Pochettino has been out of work for nearly a year following his firing at Spurs, but his appearance on Sky Sports Monday night was a clear sign that he is now ready to return to the dugout. The Argentine is understood to have had a conversation with at least one high-profile club in recent weeks with a view to a possible return to work.

Pochettino would be a strong candidate to replace Solskjaer, but United will not be the only one interested. United continue to back Solskjaer, but the prospect of missing Pochettino will not be lost in the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Solskjaer’s position is again under intense scrutiny following Sunday’s loss to Arsenal, which left him 15th in the Premier League, followed by Wednesday’s loss to Champions League minnows Istanbul Basaksehir.

The loss at Everton on Saturday would increase the pressure on the Norwegian ahead of the international break.

Solskjaer remains a popular figure among the playing team, who see the United legend as a likeable character. But there are concerns about whether he is the man to change the club’s season.

United have enjoyed some stellar Champions League results this season, beating Paris Saint-Germain and then Red Bull Leipzig 5-0. But doubts persist about Solskjaer’s position as an elite coach.

There is also a sense within the squad that the club would benefit from the appointment of a manager to ensure that there is a clear plan of action regarding recruitment.
