Manchester United night headlines when Jadon Sancho transfer admission was made

Here are the headlines from Manchester United’s night on Monday, January 4.

Sancho admission of Dortmund boss

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke admitted that Jadon Sancho was hoping to change clubs last summer when United made a concerted effort to sign the right-back.

Sancho was United’s number one priority going into the summer window, but any deal was thwarted by financial concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic. Dortmund insisted on its € 120 million (£ 108 million) asking price, while United wanted to structure the deal with a lower initial fee, something Dortmund would not accept.

Since then, Sancho has been unable to replicate his sensational form from last season, and Watzke admits that the transfer saga may have played a role.

“Unconsciously, Jadon had probably already prepared himself a bit for a change. I think at least he had thought about it so much that he lost his cool,” Watzke told German magazine Kicker.

The Dortmund CEO added: “I think he needs two or three success stories in a row, then things will get better again quickly. He is still one of the greatest talents out there.”

Caicedo leaves transfer trail

Moisés Caicedo ‘liked’ a recent Instagram post from the club’s official account that shows a video of Paul Pogba executing a delicious skill.

The Ecuadorian has been linked to United, which is currently in extensive negotiations with his current club, Independiente del Valle, regarding a transfer in January.

While reports in Ecuador claimed a deal was official, MEN Sport understands that negotiations are still ongoing on a € 6 million (£ 5.4 million) deal that could include a 20% sale clause.

The midfielder represents a change in the club’s transfer policy to sign a large number of the most talented teenage players in world football.

And as negotiations continue, based on his recent behavior on social media, Caicedo is keeping an eye on what happens at Old Trafford.

Fletcher named first team coach

Former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed to the first team coaching staff by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fletcher had been working with the under-16s as he continued to work towards earning his coach badges. However, Solskjaer now wants to incorporate the Scotsman’s experience and winning mentality into the first team setup.

Manchester United extended their unbeaten streak in the Premier League to 10 games, as they recorded a deserved 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on New Years Day.

Goals from Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes did the job as United kept up the pressure on the defending champions and league leaders Liverpool.

United’s next game is against City in the Carabao Cup semi-final midweek.

Fletcher made more than 340 appearances for the club in a 13-year span at Old Trafford. He won five league titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and a League Cup during his time at the club.

Michael Carrick, another former midfielder, is already included in the coach’s setup, while Solskjaer is a former forward.

On the appointment, Solskjaer said: “Darren has United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player.”

“He is at the beginning of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the court together with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work will be a great addition to the staff.”
