Here are the headlines from Manchester United’s night on Thursday 22 October.

De Gea responds to his biggest challenge with United

David de Gea was named Manchester United’s best player of the match in their impressive 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Spaniard has improved a lot this season, and former Reds midfielder Darren Fletcher highlighted why after his midweek masterclass.

“People wonder why Dean Henderson was kept, it was basically to tell David ‘now you have a challenge,'” Fletcher told BT Sport.

“I think [Sergio] Romero was always happy to be the second choice, but now David has a genuine contender for the number one spot and he’s getting the best of him.

“Their performance tonight was fantastic, he kept them in the game with great saves. David has been in top form this season and it is no coincidence.

“Dean Henderson is a threat, he wants to be number one, he’s confident, but he has a long way to go.

“Glad to see David get back to his best form.”

After two excellent performances in the League Cup, Henderson is putting a lot of pressure on De Gea this season.

Hargreaves points out the selection dilemma

Owen Hargreaves believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have a hard time finding a reason to remove Axel Tuanzebe from the starting lineup after the defender’s impeccable performance against PSG.

“I love him,” former Reds midfielder Hargreaves said on BT Sport. “Good luck getting this boy off the team.

“To be fair, he’s a good athlete, makes good decisions, physically has a presence, didn’t flinch with (Kylian) Mbappé or Neymar, I think he grew on the occasion.

Tuanzebe had not appeared with United’s first team in ten months before being included in the starting XI in Paris.

Harry Maguire did not travel with the team due to a hamstring problem and could face a fight to claim his spot, although it remains to be seen whether Solskjaer will persist with the back three used Tuesday or return to four.

Giggs provides transfer verdict

United legend Ryan Giggs has described new signing Edinson Cavani as a “proper center forward” and believes the Uruguayan is precisely what United lacked last season.

“I faced Cavani in my second game for Wales, and he was better than Suarez, in fact, in the game. I didn’t think it was that good, it was really a handful, “Giggs said on the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel.

“Now, he hasn’t played in a long time so he may be a little rusty, but what he’s getting is a center forward, so I think a lot of fans have been clamoring.

“A proper center forward, who can lead the line. We have Marcus, we have Martial, who is half winger, half center forward, but Cavani is a center forward, a target.

“He has the experience. I hope that, like Bruno, he makes the players around him even better.”
