‘United needs someone like Haaland’

Former United player Lee Sharpe has urged his former club to target a “goal scoring machine” like Harry Kane or Erling Haaland.

United signed Edinson Cavani to a short-term deal last summer and has been playing Anthony Martial as number 9, but Sharpe said Astro Stadium that someone like Haaland would be ideal.

“I think Haaland is amazing.

“I played with his father in Leeds and he couldn’t score a goal even if he tried and his son has become a prolific goal scoring machine, he’s absolutely incredible.

“I would love to see him at Old Trafford, but whoever signs it, if someone does it at the end of this season, be careful.

“If Liverpool or Manchester City catch him, I don’t think there is anybody to stop them and win the league.

“I think Martial in his day can be absolutely fantastic and then he can just tune out and not seem interested and just wander around the place.

“Cavani, years of experience and a great scorer, but I’m not sure I can do it week after week. It will be used as an impact sub. Rashford will cut and switch from medium to wide.

“I think the next thing for United is Haaland or someone like Harry Kane, a goal scoring machine because they create so many opportunities.

“If you are a scorer, a natural scorer, you are going to have chances and you are going to score sacks in that club.”
