Manchester United are considering alternate forwards if they do not agree to a contract extension with Edinson Cavani for next season.

The 34-year-old has missed eight of United’s last nine games and withdrew from the team to face AC Milan late this week, telling Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he didn’t feel like playing.

There has been some frustration over Cavani’s refusal to participate recently, despite being approved by medical staff, and Solskjaer has previously revealed that the forward likes to “train really hard before playing.”

Cavani’s father, Luis, has also questioned his son’s future, saying he could sign for Boca Juniors and that he “doesn’t feel comfortable” at United.

The initial deal to sign the forward as a free agent last October saw him sign a one-year deal, with an option for one more year, but which will only be activated after discussions between the two sides.

Solskjaer has revealed that the club and Cavani are still in talks, but hinted that he might be forced to consider diving into the transfer market this summer if the former Paris St-Germain and Napoli striker leaves.

“We want a competitive team and we need someone up there to score goals for us. So we’re looking at it,” he said.

“We are talking to Eddy. Edinson is a great forward and whatever he decides to do, let’s see. We are in a good dialogue with him.”
