Murphy on United vs Liverpool title battle
Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy has told the Merseyside club to embrace a possible title battle with Manchester United this season.
He’s excited for the two rivals to face each other for the Premier League crown.
This is what Murphy said, writing in the Daily Mail:
“My natural instinct is not to wish Manchester United the best, but I have to appreciate that seeing them in the mix of titles, currently alongside Liverpool, is good for the game.
“The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester City has been fascinating in recent years, but nothing can compare to seeing the two biggest clubs in the country, Liverpool and United, go head-to-head.
“United’s resurgence with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is an example that patience may be the best policy towards a manager. There have been many occasions when Solskjaer has been discarded or needed a result to secure his job and he has always found a way. .
“That’s a credit to him and perhaps a lesson for happy-to-fire presidents that sometimes you have to give managers a proper chance, particularly when they’re trying to instigate long-term change.
“I think Solskjaer has performed remarkably well in the last two years. Hard not to like it. I think they will come up short this season, over 38 games, Liverpool and City are still stronger, but they have made United competitive again.” .
“And if the worst happens and United ends up champions, Solskjaer is the only person who wouldn’t mind winning because he would stay humble and take it the right way, like Jurgen Klopp did in Liverpool.
“If José Mourinho had won the league with United, it would have been something different!”
