Scholes and Hargreaves on United’s manager
Paul Scholes has expressed doubts about how suitable United would be for a manager due to his lack of a discernible style of play with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Here’s what he told fellow BT Sport expert Owen Hargreaves in a discussion about the job vacancy at Old Trafford.
“I think the big problem United have right now is that they don’t really know how to play. They change from week to week, how can they find a player?
Let’s say they play 4-3-3 every week, they can find the type of player. I can find two wide players. That is the big difference with Sir Alex. He knew exactly how he was going to play so he could buy the right types of players.
“It’s practically impossible for a head scout or a football director because you have no idea what kind of player you want.”
Hargreaves had said:
“I think you just look at Michael Edwards, what he’s doing in Liverpool, the work he’s done. The boy is doing a clinic every summer on how to sign a player. Look at [Diogo] Jota, who has entered, the impact he has had. Liverpool had a really good team before Alisson came in and [Virgil] van Dijk, but you don’t need much, so go and sign one there, one there.
“You go from being a good team to a great team and then you add Fabinho, Thiago [Alcantara]. I think that’s the model, so I think you need that guy.
“It’s not just about the coach. They’ve tried [Louis] van Gaal, they tried [Jose] Mourinho. I think Ole now, give it time, but they have to fix that side, recruiting is the only thing that will close the gap “
