Manchester United have extended Jesse Lingard’s contract for another year.
The 28-year-old forward has yet to appear in a Premier League match for United this season and was one of the players expected to leave last summer before the coronavirus hit. That reduced transfers in the summer with fewer clubs able to offer high transfer fees or salaries.
Lingard himself earns around £ 100,000 a week, and his contract was due to end at the end of the current season. That would have allowed him to negotiate with foreign teams and sign a pre-contract to go away for nothing at the end of this season.
However, United had the option to activate one more year in their contract to prevent it from moving forward without the club receiving a transfer fee. There are several clubs that still have an interest in it, suggesting that they will be looking to move it into the January transfer window or attempt to sell it in the summer, when the club’s finances are expected to look more positive across Europe.
There are at least three Premier League teams that could take a look at it. José Mourinho was a huge fan of Lingard when they were both at Old Trafford and could look to add strength to his team by taking him to North London. Another London club, West Ham, may be interested, with another former United manager, David Moyes, in charge there at the moment.
Everton, which has been something of a retirement home for United players over the years, might also be interested, but recently Everton have been buying good players rather than bad, suggesting that Lingard is no longer suitable for moving west to Liverpool. And let’s link it to Newcastle, why not.
