Jaap Stam gives United advice on Pogba future

Former Manchester United center-back Jaap Stam believes Manchester United should keep hold of Paul Pogba, claiming some of the criticism of the Frenchman has been unfair.

Stam, who was a team-mate of current United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his time at Old Trafford, believes Pogba can become a significant part of the club’s next great squad.

Pogba has missed most of the current campaign through injury, and Stam believes a partnership between the Frenchman and January signing Bruno Fernandes could be integral to United rebuilding.

Speaking to Goal, the Dutchman, who played more than 100 games for United between 1998 and 2001, said: “I would love to see Paul stay because I think he’s a quality player.

“People expect a lot from him and there’s a lot of criticism towards him. Sometimes you can say that’s fair but other times the criticism he gets is not correct. ”

I added: “If you look at Fernandes, Pogba and McTominay, I think those three together in midfield could be very interesting.”

Giggs reveals how Ferguson treated four players differently to the rest

Ryan Giggs was one of the constants during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at Manchester United, so he has more experience than most of how the manager treated his players.

And, according to the Welshman, Fergie wasn’t the type to give special treatment… with the exception of four players.

“There were three or four players that he never had a go at,” Giggs told beIN Sports, and the Welshman wasn’t one of them.

Eric Cantona was one – Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo. They were all in their own ways match-winners. They did the stuff on the pitch, so he never felt he had to. ”

As Giggs put it, these were the only players who could avoid criticism even if they were having a bad game, though Ferguson was never afraid to tear into other United players for poor performances.

“As long as [those four] we were doing it on the pitch, I’ve handled them in a different way, ”he said.

Neville questions Ighalo transfer value

Gary Neville isn’t convinced Odion Ighalo is worth the reported fee it will take Manchester United to sign him on a permanent deal.

The Nigerian international will cost United around £ 20m this summer according to Sky Sports after scoring four goals in eight appearances (per WhoScored) since joining on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January, but none of the four have come in the Premier League.

“Is Ighalo worth £ 20m? Probably not in this market,” Neville said over Instagram Live.

“He may have been if he continued before scoring goals but you probably don’t need now to spend £ 20m.”

Ighalo was brought in at the end of the January transfer window after an injury to Marcus Rashford had left United light up top, but the England striker has since made progress on his recovery from a back problem.

The on-loan man will only be on United’s books until May 31 as things stand, and – while Ighalo has expressed a desire to extend his loan – may have matters taken out of his hands with the Chinese Super League due to restart in June or July.
