Harry Maguire has no intention of asking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for a break, leaving any decision on a possible dismissal in the hands of the Manchester United manager.
The world’s most expensive defender has suffered a traumatic three months, culminating in his red card in the first half in England’s loss to Denmark on Wednesday night.
Maguire’s performances have come under fire since the start of the season, raising fears that he is psychologically drained after being convicted of three separate charges following an alleged violent altercation while on vacation in Mykonos in August.
The United captain publicly and privately maintains his innocence and has successfully requested a new trial that is expected to be heard next year.
United legend Rio Ferdinand suggested on Thursday that the £ 80 million man would benefit if he was taken out of the line of fire.
But Sportsmail understands that Maguire is fully committed to United’s cause and is not considering a break from the game.
That means Solskjaer, who has supported Maguire during these difficult times, will make the decision on whether to give the center-back a mid-season break.
With major Premier League and Champions League matches on the horizon, it remains to be seen whether the United manager would consider that option.
Even after his nightmare at Wembley, Maguire was said to be levelheaded when he returned to the club on Thursday acknowledging that he is suffering a decline in form.
Like all players, Maguire had a short summer break of about two weeks.
His free time was interrupted by the incident in Greece and subsequent court proceedings, causing him to miss part of his summer training program, although there is no indication that he is out of shape for the match.
Ferdinand said: ‘I think it’s obvious to see that he’s going through a rough patch right now.
In these situations, it is sometimes necessary to remove it from the oven.
“Ole has a great job on his hands and I think he has a very important role to play in this. Whether it’s time to give him some rest, let him recover.
‘I know a lot of players will see that as an absolute blemish on their resume, but sometimes it’s something that is needed. I definitely benefited from that and maybe it’s something Ole and his management team can consider.
“ If you can control the narrative and you are very clear about what you are going to do, I think it makes it very easy.
“ I don’t think with the pandemic right now I can go to the beach anytime soon because you need to be safe.
“But I don’t think it matters where you are, it’s about being pulled out of the line of fire and having time and a chance to sit back and reflect.”
