Manchester City midfielder Sam Mewis has been named US Soccer Player of the Year for 2020.

After a stellar 2019 in which she helped lead the US women’s national team to their fourth World Cup, Mewis continued her outstanding play at the club level, first with the North Carolina Courage and then with City.

One of the five finalists, Mewis obtained 45% of the tabulated votes, followed by Crystal Dunn (29%) and Lindsey Horan (11%).

“Obviously, it is a great honor to be part of the list of players who have won this award in the past,” Mewis said in a statement.

“It goes without saying that it is the team that does the work on the field and I have a lot of respect for the other nominees this year and all of my teammates. I loved playing with them on Team USA. And with my teammates for the Courage and Man City It is still a great honor to be called to a US camp, to have playing time and to be able to score goals for my country.

“All of that is still surreal to me. I owe a lot to so many people who have helped me on my journey and any individual award is a credit to them.”

After playing five games for Courage in the Women’s National Soccer League Challenge Cup, Mewis moved to Man City, where she has played 17 games in all competitions, scoring six goals.

He also scored in the FA Cup final that City won 3-1 against Everton.

In 2020, Mewis played in eight of the nine games for the USWNT, started six and scored four goals, all in the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

“I am very happy for Sam,” USWNT manager Vlatko Andonovski said. “For her work ethic and mindset to be the best player she can be, her daily dedication to being a professional, and her sincere care for her teammates and the team in general, she is a true example of what the USWNT stands for.

“She has proven her worth and excelled in three different settings this year and I know she has even more great moments ahead of her in her career.”

Mewis ended 2020 on a special note, playing with her older sister Kristie during the USWNT’s 2-0 win over the Netherlands on November 27.

Kristie scored the deciding goal in a game that marked the first time the two played together for the USWNT in more than six years.

“It has been a strange year with many difficulties for many people, but I am also very grateful for the humanity that we have seen this year,” added Mewis.

“I am truly honored to have the opportunity to play for the US and for two fantastic clubs this year. My family and my husband have been very supportive and even have the opportunity to play soccer this year with all the uncertainty that it has been a gift.

“I am grateful for the support of Vlatko and his staff, the Courage and Paul Riley, who have had a great impact on me, and all the Man City coaches, staff and players who welcomed Rose. [Lavelle] and me with open arms “.

US Soccer’s Player of the Year has been honored since 1985, when midfielder Sharon Remer won the inaugural award. Abby Wambach won it six times, the most of any player.
