German legend hammers Guardiola’s approach
German legend Lothar Matthaus has told SportBild that Pep Guardiola is self-centered when it comes to big games and that has prevented him from succeeding at Bayer Munich and City.
Despite winning 13 national titles at Bayern and City, including five league titles, he has not reached a Champions League final since leaving Barcelona.
And Matthaus has attributed that to Guardiola’s ego, telling SportBild (via SportWitness)
“With Pep Guardiola I have the feeling that he always wants to do something special in big games.
“Barcelona had a DNA, a system that it achieved. Pep was successful there. With Bayern and City, he tried again and again with changes and failed again and again.
“He always wanted to show that he could do even better. I would like to tell him: Pep, you are a giant coach, but keep your system! I would describe him as self-centered – yes, that’s a harsh word, but it’s because of what he did: At Bayern, Robert Lewandowski even had to play left wing once. That didn’t work at all. “
