Manchester City star Phil Foden reacts by scoring England’s first goals

Manchester City star Phil Foden has described England’s goal as “one of the best” moments of his short career to date.

Foden started the dead rubber match against Iceland as the Three Lions closed their Nations League campaign in style at Wembley.

The City midfielder helped jump-start the scoring after 20 minutes when his cross into the box was guided into the far corner by West Ham’s Declan Rice. Mason Mount doubled the lead just four minutes later to secure the three points.

It wouldn’t be until the 80th minute that England scored again, but it was Foden who grabbed it, scoring his first goal for the national team by converting Jadon Sancho’s cut.

The ‘Stockport Iniesta’ assured that it would be his name in the headlines moments later when he pocketed his second, an excellent shot in the lower corner from distance.

When asked by Sky Sports about the goals after the match, Foden couldn’t contain his happiness in scoring for his country.

“Up there with one of the best you know, I really enjoyed it,” he said. “Obviously scoring my first goal for England means a lot to me.

“I couldn’t stop smiling after that, it’s an incredible feeling and I’m going to try to enjoy it as much as I can tonight.

“I know Jadon well, I have played with him in the quarry and when he received the ball I reached the area and he gave me a good assist and luckily he entered.

“When you score you have a lot of confidence and I got the second goal well from outside the area, something I have to work on to score more goals outside the area, so I’m very happy with that.”

The targets are especially significant as they arrived on Foden’s return to the national setting after he was sent home during his last call for violating COVID-19 protocols.

“To be honest, it was one of the hardest times of my life,” he added. “And that’s the time when you need the trust of your coaches and Gareth respected me a lot to play with me tonight, to trust me. It means everything and I’m happy to pay him goals and play well.”

“I was determined to go back and do my best and do my best. I was a little nervous at first, but I got used to it.”
