Manchester City haven’t given up on signing Lionel Messi for free this summer, but will wait until March or April before making a move.
Messi’s contract with the Catalan giants expires at the end of the season, but he has been allowed to speak with other clubs since January.
Manchester City, who tried to sign the Argentine international in August, will face competition from Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG have taken a different approach to City when it comes to signing Messi. The Ligue 1 team has made its interest in the forward known, while Pep Guardiola’s team is said to be biding its time.
“PSG is making a mistake with the strategy they are using,” a source told ESPN. ‘Leo doesn’t like all that noise in the media and even less the kind of comments [which have been made].
PSG sporting director Leonardo confirmed the club’s interest in Messi by explaining how they continued to monitor his situation.
While Mauricio Pochettino publicly stated that he would welcome Messi to the team after taking over the club in January.
PSG stars Angel Di Maria and Neymar have also shown the support of the squad by signing Messi.
As a result, PSG reportedly offered Messi a base salary of £ 800,000 a week in addition to a staggering £ 40 million subscription fee.
However, the city has taken an alternative approach: going about its business in silence. Several Manchester City staff members are believed to have been in regular contact with the Argentine’s representatives.
It remains to be seen if Messi will choose one of the clubs and leave the Camp Nou in the summer.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Messi has stood out in recent weeks with Barcelona.
The talisman has scored seven goals and posted one assist in his eight appearances for the club.
As a result, Barcelona have remained undefeated in 11 league games and reached the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.
Ronald Koeman’s team will also play the first leg of the Champions League tie against PSG next week.
