Manchester United have taken the lead in the competitive race to sign Bayern Munich star David Alaba.
Alaba, 28, is out of contract next summer and has failed to reach a new deal with Bayern, and the player’s salary demands drive a wedge between him and the club.
The Austrian defender is also a target for Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, while Manchester City, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have long been linked.
But United is hoping they can beat the crowd of rival suitors to sign Alaba to a pre-contract in the January transfer window.
The Red Devils bosses have spoken with Alaba’s agent, Pini Zahavi, as they struggle to negotiate terms before a possible arrival at Old Trafford next summer.
January is expected to be a busy month for the two-time Champions League winner, as clubs will be able to engage in talks with him.
Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is resigned to his player leaving after lengthy negotiations were unsuccessful.

“Bayern did everything they could to try to reach an agreement,” Rummenigge said. “We had a lot of conversations, but we wanted answers from him by the end of October.
‘This did not happen and I do not know if we will return to negotiations. What I want to make clear is that our offer showed exactly how much we value him, but he did not accept it. “
Manchester United hope to beat rival clubs until Alaba is signed by offering him the lucrative contract that Bayern would not make.
The player reportedly sought improved terms that would bring him up to the level of Robert Lewandowski’s € 12 million per year (£ 11 million per year) deal.
But the competition for Alaba will be intense and Real is believed to be the pioneer in the search. However, Rummenigge added: “I don’t know anything about the Real Madrid rumors. You are free to talk to whomever you want from 1 January.”
