While the biggest story of Manchester United’s deadline was the inability to complete a move for Jadon Sancho, the club struck a number of deals over the line.
Edinson Cavani has joined in a free transfer, while Uruguayan compatriot Facundo Pellistri has completed a move from Peñarol and an agreement has also been agreed for Atalanta teenager Amad Diallo, who will arrive in January.
United also sold Chris Smalling to Roma, and the deal was finalized towards the end of the Italian window, but there could be more back and forth domestically.
Given that Premier League clubs have until October 16 to complete business with their EFL counterparts, we have the latest on a United goal, plus the fallout from two deadline stories that went in different directions.
Sarr Watford’s departure collapsed ‘due to United’s interest’
With more than a week for Manchester United to complete more EFL club signings, Ismaila Sarr’s name is one that may come up in the conversation in the days ahead.
The Watford winger has been linked to a return to the Premier League after standing out with the Hornets during their relegation campaign last season, and United’s interest has been substantial enough to hamper other deals, according to reports in France.
Ouest France (via Inside Futbol) reports that Sarr’s former club Rennes made a late move to bring the winger on loan to the deadline day, after selling Raphinha to Leeds United.
However, according to the French publication, Watford remains hopeful of selling the Senegal international to Manchester United in a permanent deal, having also seen loan interest from the Old Trafford club on Monday.
Sarr, who scored five goals for Watford in the Premier League last season, has made two appearances under new Hornets manager Vladimir Ivic in the Championship.
United ‘could try again’ after Dembélé’s move doesn’t materialize
Manchester United’s interest in Ousmane Dembele did not ultimately lead to a deadline deal, but the failure to complete an October move doesn’t mean their interest is gone forever.
United were reportedly eager to take the Barcelona player on loan, but reports in Spain hint that last minute contract disputes got in the way of a deal.
Citing reports from Mundo Deportivo and Sport, Sport Witness suggests that Barcelona tried to convince the French forward to sign a contract extension before going on loan, causing the deal to collapse.
It is reported that Dembélé, a great Borussia Dortmund signing in 2017, has always been eager to stay at Camp Nou and is eager to fight for his place at Barca.
However, according to Sport, United could be convinced to replace the 23-year-old again if he plays more minutes for Barcelona and proves his fitness after having a difficult time with injuries since moving to La Liga.
Parma manager claims his club had a deal for United rookie Diallo
Old Trafford-bound teenager Amad Diallo will not arrive at his new club yet, but the player’s move to Manchester United has already generated controversy.
In parts of the window, it looked like the 18-year-old would move from Atalanta to Parma, only for United to enter at the eleventh hour, much to the chagrin of Parma manager Alessandro Lucarelli.
“You must ask Atalanta about Diallo,” Lucarelli told Sky Sport Italia (via TeamTalk)
“We had the agreement and then the negotiation with Manchester United began and they sold it.”
According to United’s announcement of the deal by the winger, which is subject to a work permit, medical and personal terms and will take effect in January, the club has been monitoring him since 2016.
Diallo made his Serie A debut for Atalanta last season, scoring in a 7-1 victory over Udinese, and played two more games for the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
