Where is the consistency? – Solskjaer on arbitration
Manchester United “have to fight” and will not “give away” the Premier League title ahead of time, insists manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United drew humble West Brom and are second in the table, ahead of Leicester on goal difference, but seven points behind the Manchester City leaders.
Pep Guardiola’s men, who have won 15 matches in a row in all competitions, also have a match in hand on both sides.
Solskjaer said his team needs to “put pressure on City.”
He told BBC Sport: “We are going to build momentum and win games. They [City] they are in good shape. We and Leicester have to fight. “
When asked if his team is still in the running for the title, Captain Harry Maguire said: “Of course we are. We have to go again and win the next one and then the next one.”
‘We won’t let City slip away’ Bruno Fernandes scored his 14th league goal of the season with an impressive volley
United had moved two points away from their rivals on 20 January by beating Fulham, but suffered a surprising loss at home to bottom line Sheffield United in their next league game, allowing City to take the lead.
It was the start of a losing streak of just one win in their last five games, the latest setback being a 1-1 draw against a struggling West Brom who is second from the bottom of the table.
Solskjaer told Sky Sports: “I said we shouldn’t talk about ourselves [in the title race]. A compliment to the guys who got into position that we are now.
“We won’t let them [Manchester City] run away with him, we’ll play them soon. We’re not going to reveal it early, no, we won’t. “
United fell behind after just 83 seconds at The Hawthorns, courtesy of a header from Mbaye Diagne and saved a point thanks to an impressive volley from Bruno Fernandes.
Solskjaer added: “I’m disappointed. We want to score three points on the board and challenge the teams above us. We got off to a difficult start by going 1-0 down after one minute.”
‘VAR must have been asleep’
United thought they had a chance to win the game when referee Craig Pawson pointed to the penalty spot after Semi Ajayi drove Maguire into the box, although the United defender appeared in an offside position.
After consulting with VAR Jon Moss and reviewing the incident on the court monitor, Pawson decided there was insufficient contact and reversed his original decision.
“We were so sure it was a penalty,” Maguire said. “I’m not sure why they needed to send it [the referee] to a monitor. The clip was minimal but it was a penalty. It seems that the decisions are against us. “
Diagne could have scored a hat-trick – Allardyce
Solskjaer told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is a foul and a penalty of course if [referee] let me continue. I think Harry is offside when Bruno Fernandes hits the ball. Someone must have been asleep.
“Too many times … a week is a foul, a week is not a foul, a week is a penalty and another week is not a penalty.”
Allardyce said it would have been an “absolute injustice” if the penalty had been awarded and United scored the winning goal from the point of view.
He added: “The confusing thing is that Harry Maguire is offside earlier. What should have been the decision is that this is offside, so let’s keep playing. I’m hugely confused.”
