Man Utd should be careful after previous transfer failures, says Solskjaer

The Reds have spent a lot in recent years in an attempt to regain their position at the top of English football, but with little success.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer understands the fans’ cries for more investment in the Manchester United team, but pointed to the club’s past mistakes in the market as a reason for caution.

United have spent huge sums of money on star names in recent years in an attempt to relive the glory days enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But people like Alexis Sánchez, Ángel Di María, Romelu Lukaku and other arrivals with a lot of money have not been able to keep up with their billing and have suffered losses since then.

By comparison, the Reds have been more subdued in the current window, with Donny van de Beek as their only confirmed signing, although Edinson Cavani is set to complete a free transfer to add more muscle to his front line.

And Solskjaer admits that hiring mistakes made by predecessors David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho mean that he has no carte blanche to spend.

“I don’t want to talk about names who didn’t have a successful career at Man Utd before moving on because there are different reasons why people are not successful at the club,” he told reporters ahead of Sunday’s clash with Tottenham at Old Trafford. .

“But yeah, now we have to be very thorough and very safe when we bet big money on the players.

“They have to be correct for the future, they have to be correct for now and they have to be correct for the group that is already here. It is much more complex than simply pointing a finger at a player and saying, “He has the quality.”

“When you sign players, you go through a thorough process to make sure that the ones you bring in are the right ones for the club. It is easy to choose the best players in the world. All the clubs know them.

“The hiring process means that it’s vital to make sure that when you put money in, it’s spent well. I think the people we have involved to monitor and identify the players are doing a good job.

“We have lost some good players who have had good results at other clubs, but we felt we wanted to go in a different direction.

“When I came in, my opinion was that we had to give young players a chance, that we had to see if we could find something in our own ranks, and that has worked well.”

Despite those costly transfer setbacks, Solskjaer isn’t convinced that appointing a football director, as supreme Sevilla Monchi suggested this week, is a magic bullet.

“There are always people who want to talk about how well they are doing and how well they are doing,” Solskjaer added.

“We all have different views on how football should be played and how clubs should be run. We have good people running our club.

“There are always discussions behind the scenes, that people do not know, about how we are doing things and evaluating how we are doing them.”

When asked if United could name a football director, Solskjaer replied: “It is not my place to say. We are working with this structure at the moment and I feel that the results from last season have seen a great improvement. “We and we said that we are moving in the right direction, so I hope we can continue this season.”
