Milan had two goals disallowed and Manchester United missed a couple of assistants, but Simon Kjaer managed a well-deserved 1-1 draw at Old Trafford after Amad Diallo’s header.

Match report
This was the battle of the Red Devils, the first time the clubs met in the Europa League, after the 10th in the Champions League and the European Cup. Both had serious injury problems, missing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mario Mandzukic, Ismael Bennacer, Hakan Calhanoglu, Theo Hernández, Ante Rebic and Alessio Romagnoli, so Diogo Dalot faced his parent club. The hosts did not have Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata and David de Gea.
Rafael Leao was the only forward available and had the ball in the net after five minutes, but he had gone out of play.
Gianluigi Donnarumma pushed in a snapshot of Anthony Martial, but Milan saw another goal disallowed when Franck Kessie shot into the top corner. The ball had brushed his arm when he lowered it with his chest and that was considered handball.
Milan were playing better than the hosts, despite so many stars missing, and Jordan Henderson put down a deflected effort from Rade Krunic before Alexis Saelemaekers bit his gloves.
The first genuine opportunity Manchester United created was on a 39-minute set piece, thrown at the back post by Bruno Fernandes, where Harry Maguire somehow managed to get him on the post from a courtyard.
Anthony Martial was replaced by former Atalanta teenager Amad Diallo and made the immediate difference by breaking the deadlock. Bruno Fernandes floated a ball over the top, Fikayo Tomori was caught and Diallo threw his header back on Donnarumma.
Brahim Diaz had a charged shot and Kessie forced another save, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a risky challenge on Brahim Diaz.
Krunic nodded from a Davide Calabria cross and Saelemaekers again scraped a shot set by Kessie. Yet once again, they nearly conceded against the run when Greenwood rolled for the goal and Daniel James shot incredibly wide.
Scott McTominay was very lucky to avoid a second yellow card when he dropped Krunic just outside the D as he prepared to shoot in the 83rd minute.
Leao threw a volley of fresh air as Kessie set him up in the last minute, but won a decisive corner kick that found Simon Kjaer for a free header. It was a more than deserved draw and a goal away from home.
