Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will prioritize hiring a new center-back next summer, but David Alaba and Dayot Upamecano are not under consideration, according to reports. The Red Devils have plenty of firepower at the top of the field, but they have often found themselves caught in the rear this period.
Victor Lindelof has established himself as Harry Maguire’s central defender partner for most of this season.
But there are still questions about the pair’s long-term ability to help the club fight for the Premier League title.
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Solskjaer would like to add some experience to his bottom line in the form of Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.
The 28-year-old is a serial winner who has clinched nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League titles.
He is also out of contract in the summer, so he can sign a pre-agreement with a foreign club next month.
However, the Telegraph claims that Solskjaer has no interest in Alaba and that his team will not join the race that includes Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Chelsea.
It’s no secret that United have been following RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano for some time and saw it as a move this summer.
The Telegraph reports that Solskjaer has removed the French international from the top of his wish list and will be looking elsewhere.
There could be funds to bring in a new defender in the January window, but the situation is similar to when Bruno Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford in the middle of last season.
“The world, economically and in football, has also changed. It depends on how the injury situations are in the different teams.”
Before United can strengthen their squad, they have a busy holiday period with a trip to Leicester on Boxing Day followed by a home game against Wolves on December 29.
