Gary Neville couldn’t resist gloating on Twitter for the New Year, busting a bottle of champagne as Manchester United rose to second place in the Premier League.
The former right-back’s former full-back is tied on points with leader Liverpool after another Bruno Fernandes penalty shot secured the win over Aston Villa, trailing only their rivals by eight goals on goal difference.
United have not won the Premier League since 2013 and have had little to celebrate since Sir Alex Ferguson resigned despite heavy investment. Now undefeated in the top flight since 1 November, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team is preparing a title challenge.
“Happy New Year (Joint Top),” Neville said on Twitter, attaching a laughing crying emoji and a video of the expert drinking champagne, showing his best satisfied face.
Neville’s Sky Sports sparring partner Jamie Carragher replied, ‘I had the champagne ready! No wonder he said Pogba’s was a pen, but Tierney’s wasn’t !!
Fernandes’ winning penalty shot, the fifth after just 16 games, was won by Paul Pogba, who hit the platform when challenged by Douglas Luiz de Villa.
Replays showed that the Frenchman had tripped over his own feet, but the VAR kicked anyway.
Just a week earlier, Neville insisted that Kieran Tierney had been “smart” in winning what was “certainly not a penalty” for Arsenal on Boxing Day.
The Gunners defender had easily fallen to Chelsea’s Reece James within the 18-yard box in an incident similar to Pogba’s, helping the Gunners beat their London rivals.
Rival fans responded with digs during the 2011-12 Premier League season, when Manchester City sealed the title with Sergio Agüero’s famous goal on the final day, beating United on goal difference.
“Like you were on top of a set in 2012,” @ Niraj_G16 joked.
