Manchester United “need not spend” £ 20m ($ 25m) on Odion Ighalo this summer, according to Gary Neville, who questioned the value of the Shanghai Shenhua loan in today’s market.

Ighalo has been an unexpected success for the Red Devils since completing a short-term loan move to Old Trafford in January on the day of the transfer deadline.

United was criticized for turning to the 30-year-old forward who had spent the previous three years of his career in China, but quickly demonstrated that he was prepared to play for one of the world’s biggest clubs.

Ighalo scored four goals in his first eight outings for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team before the 2019-20 campaign was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, and his final effort came during a Europa League first leg victory by 5- 0 at LASK on March 12. .

The former Nigerian international will return to Shanghai Shenhua in late May, but has expressed a desire to remain on United’s books until at least the end of the season. It has been suggested that Solskjaer is interested in signing Ighalo permanently, but the experienced leader’s current employers will only sanction his departure if his £ 20 million valuation is met.

Neville believes that rate is too high for a player whose progress at the Theater of Dreams was interrupted by the Covid-19 crisis.

The former United right winger said on Instagram Live: “Ighalo is worth £ 20m? Probably not in this market. He could have done it if he continued before scoring goals, but he probably doesn’t need to spend £ 20m.”

Ighalo has received accolades from supporters and experts for his performances in a United jersey, with club legend Andy Cole praising his impact.

Cole told MUTV in April: “I think he has done quite well when given the opportunity, has applied very well at the club and has scored four good goals, four goals from center-forward, you cannot ask for much. plus.”

It is not yet known whether Ighalo will be allowed to stay in Manchester beyond the end of the month, particularly given that the proposed resumption of the Premier League season remains in a state of flux.

Top-flight officials have outlined their plans for the ‘Restart Project’ to get underway in June, with the remaining matches scheduled to take place in neutral locations, but Watford and Brighton have already voiced concerns about sacrificing the advantage of the House.
