Manchester United have reportedly joined the race for Bayern Munich star David Alaba after making “formal contact” with representatives of the outgoing defender.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has accepted that Alaba is likely to leave the German giants when his contract expires in the summer of 2021 after a new deal was not agreed despite his best efforts.

Alaba will therefore have the freedom to speak to other clubs in January, with Real Madrid, PSG and Chelsea reportedly the favorites for his next assignment.

But AS reports that United are the latest club to declare interest in the Austria international and have made formal contact with representatives of the double Champions League champion.

United wants to increase their defensive reinforcements with the current pair of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof that they fail to convince regularly.

The report indicates that United will “offer the best” after “cooling their interest” in RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, with Bayern leading the way for his signing.

With the versatile defender set to leave Bayern after 10 successful years, he is sure to have plenty of suitors for his next move.

Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been a previous admirer of Alaba, but will face competition with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea showing interest, and AS also reported that rivals Manchester City and Barcelona have a “firm interest”.

Alaba has become a central defender in recent seasons at Bayern following the incredible appearance of Alphonso Davies in his favorite left-back position.

His versatility and experience winning trophies, including nine Bundesliga titles on top of his two Champions League wins, means that securing him without a transfer fee would be a real blow to any team.
