Marcus Rashford was thwarted by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the best opportunity of the first half
Manchester United and Chelsea managed a goalless draw in the rain at Old Trafford that will convince no one that either side will play in the Premier League this season.
Chelsea will probably be happier with one point and could have had more if United captain Harry Maguire had been punished for wrapping his arm around Cesar Azpilicueta’s throat while defending a corner kick in the first half.
Although they remain trapped in the lower half of the table, United were at least able to avoid losing a third straight league game at home early in the season for the first time since 1930.
Furthermore, they can also point to three good saves by Edouard Mendy, two to deny Marcus Rashford, including one in the last minute, and another in which Bruno Fernandes was frustrated.
However, Chelsea’s biggest scare was Mendy passing the ball through his goal and going for a corner in the first half as he tried to pass Thiago Silva.
Neither Edinson Cavani, in his debut, nor Paul Pogba could turn things around in favor of the locals after they were introduced as substitutes. Mason Greenwood had the last eight minutes to make a good impression, but he didn’t.
Chelsea wins in defense but loses in attack
Successive clean sheets provide Chelsea with the kind of platform they have lacked so far this season.
Thiago Silva’s return to anchor a three-man defense provided solidity. However, it also seemed to cost Chelsea their advantage in attack.
Too often, Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic were left trying to face the United defense alone and rarely did the visitors mount concerted pressure around the United area, despite dominating possession for long periods.
England defender Reece James looked like their most inventive attacking threat with his hard-hitting bursts down the right flank. However, his last ball was poor and United goalkeeper David de Gea did not have to make a significant save.
Sixth place may seem presentable to Frank Lampard’s men right now, but they could slide down the league over the weekend and obviously a big summer outlay is yet to pay dividends.
Rashford repelled by Mendy
It’s been another incredible week for Marcus Rashford.
After getting the government to revoke its own policy of providing free school meals to children forced to stay home during the spring shutdown, the English forward responded to a lackluster response to his request for midterm meals by summoning support from everywhere except Downing Street. .
Even Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp publicly endorsed Rashford, which, considering the antipathy between their respective clubs, is something that goes.
However, what Rashford does on the field is also important, and this was a frustrating experience.
He was caught in the general non-event of the first 25 minutes. On a United counter, he was yelling for a pass over the top from Juan Mata that he could chase past Chelsea’s defense. Instead, the ball went sideways to Luke Shaw and he was lost.
Mata sent Rashford out after Fernandes gained possession inside the visiting field, but Mendy parried him off with a foot-first save. At halftime, Rashford still looked uncomfortable having come down in pain after a leg tangle with N’Golo Kante.
He recovered and after being displaced to the left following Cavani’s introduction, he remained a threat, with Azpilicueta blocking his low shot before Mendy kept his last effort out.
However, it was largely a night of frustration, summed up as he smashed the ball in irritation when the final whistle sounded.
