A 24-year-old Nigerian, Samuel Odupitan, who stabbed to death a stranger to steal his second-hand Gucci bag in Croydon, London, was convicted on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.
Odupitan, of Longheath Gardens, Croydon, killed Tyler Roye, 24, on February 26 on Bywood Avenue, Croydon.
Condemn
He appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday, December 1, where he was found guilty of murder following the fierce attack, which took place just minutes from the victim’s home.
He will be sentenced in the same court on Monday, December 7.
Tyler, who worked as a hotel concierge in Stratford, was stabbed five times in the back and abdomen. He was treated on the spot and upon arrival at the hospital, but then died in the operating room.
The court heard that on the night of Tuesday, February 25, Tyler had finished work around 11:00 p.m. and had begun his journey home. Boarding a streetcar in East Croydon, he entered the same car as Odupitan, who had traveled from West Croydon.
CCTV footage captured Odupitan eyeing Tyler intently, even moving seats to get closer to him.
Detectives believe he was drawn to the distinctive Gucci messenger bag with the embossed Bengal tiger worn by Tyler. When they reached the Arena stop, Tyler got off the trolley; completely unaware that he was being followed by Odupitan.
Within minutes, Tyler, who had just called his girlfriend, was approached by Odupitan. He heard Tyler say “Brother, brother …” before the line went dead. Odupitan stabbed Tyler five times before running off the scene.
After the incident, Tyler managed to get to the nearby address of a friend, where he raised the alarm. It collapsed inside the property. One of the wounds on his torso was 15 centimeters deep and had pierced his lung and aorta.
Tyler carried a bag with boxes of donuts for his family. This bag was found near the place where he had been attacked; open with food scattered on the pavement. Tyler’s iPhone and headphones were also discovered; but her Gucci bag was missing.
Agents from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched an investigation [Homicide].
As a result of inquiries about Tyler’s trip, Odupitan was identified from CCTV images and officers attended his address on Sunday March 1.
Odupitan was arrested and a property search was carried out; but officers were unable to locate not only Tyler’s purse, but also the jacket, pants and sneakers that Odupitan had been seen wearing that night.
He tried to claim that the distinctive jacket had been loaned to him by a friend and then returned; but he was surprised when his ex-partner confirmed that he had bought it as a gift.
An examination of Odupitan’s mobile phone revealed a series of images of knives that he had seen on the Internet, more pictures of knives sent to him by friends, as well as exchanges of text messages about knives.
Officers also discovered video of him driving a car while holding a knife. In addition, they found images of designer bags that he had searched for and photographed with. And within hours of the murder, images of the crime scene were sent to him and autopsies were searched on the Internet.
In addition to Tyler’s murder, Odupitan was also convicted of four robberies of which he pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing. The incidents took place in South London in September and October 2019 and saw Odupitan wearing a mask rob four victims, including a woman, of their watches. The three male victims were attacked during the crimes, with a knife in one of them.
Tyler Roye’s mother, Cecilia Smith, said: “Odupitan is an evil predator and opportunist who took advantage of my son for a bag. He stole my son’s precious life. He is a danger to society and has no respect for human life. “
Detective Inspector Mel Pressley of the Crime Specialist Command said: “Our thoughts today are with the family and friends of Tyler, who lost him in the most tragic and unnecessary circumstances. Nothing will ever ease your pain, but I hope today’s conviction will provide you with some comfort.
“Odupitan is an extremely dangerous and heartless individual, not only because he was capable of such brutal violence, but because he was willing to inflict it on a stranger for the sake of a material object that caught his eye and he decided he had to. to have. Very sadly for Tyler, Odupitan didn’t care about the consequences. “
