Manchester City have written to supporters offering a full refund for tickets, and there is apparently no chance they will be able to attend the remaining matches this season.
Pep Guardiola’s team had six games at the Etihad stadium when the coronavirus outbreak shut down football across Europe.
While the Premier League still intends to complete the season, the latest advice from the UK government is that professional sports matches will not be allowed until 1 June at the earliest and then only behind closed doors.
The Champions League in the last 16 second leg match against Real Madrid sold out after the City’s 2-1 victory in Spain in February, and will also be refunded along with tickets sold for away games .
The city is also awaiting information on when tickets for the upcoming season will go on sale amid restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 outbreak.
“Please note that the dates for the 2020/21 Seasoncard renewal period remain under review. We will share more information as soon as we can,” the letters stated to supporters.
The city is likely to play its remaining local games at Etihad after Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said that all 20 clubs opposed the idea of neutral venues.
The club’s still-to-play matches include the home game with Liverpool, which is just six points away from claiming its first Premier League title.
There have been some concerns that fans will flock to the stadiums despite being unable to watch the matches and Greater Manchester Police Chief Ian Hopkins identified the City and Liverpool game as an item that concerned him.
“What we fear is that people will appear in neutral or local places, which would be problematic,” he said at a press conference reported by the Manchester Evening News.
“I have no doubt [that match] It will draw crowds whether they are allowed on the ground or not. You need to think very, very carefully. We have to get to a point where it can be done safely. “
No dates have been set for the remaining matches.
In addition to the excellent Premier League matches and the Champions League draw with Real Madrid, City will also play against Newcastle United in the FA Cup. If City reached the two finals of the two cup competitions, it would play another 18 games in total.
