‘Man City has closed the gap and Liverpool will fight’: Wright-Phillips sees Guardiola’s blue moon on the rise

The former City winger hopes those at Etihad Stadium will benefit from having a deeper squad than Anfield’s title rivals.

Manchester City will have no problem “closing the gap” with Liverpool this season, says Shaun Wright-Phillips, with the defending Premier League inclined to “fight a bit” due to a lack of depth in the squad.

The Reds took the English top flight crown in 2019-20, breaking several records along the way.

Defending that award won’t be easy, after ending a 30-year wait, as the chasing group has shown ambition on and off the field in an attempt to make the battle for supremacy more competitive.

Wright-Philips believes that City will be the one to chase Liverpool down and eventually overtake them, with Pep Guardiola having more options at his disposal than Jurgen Klopp can draw on at Anfield, with Liverpool having had another quiet transfer window.

The former blues winger said talkSPORT: “It’s hard. I think the signings they have [Man City] brought in have been great additions. I think closing the gap is not a problem.

“I think Liverpool will have a bit of a hard time this year due to the fact that their starting eleven has been playing smoothly for three or four years, not many teams have managed to do that and keep the great players in shape. They have never had long-term injuries that have affected them.

“Without rest, coming out of the internationals, I still don’t feel like his team is big enough.

“The city has a big enough team. That gap will disappear. I even think Chelsea will close the gap. Liverpool will fight this year.

“They will fight to maintain the same level as last year. What they did last year was incredible. Good teams can win even when they don’t play every game well. Man Utd did. Arsenal have done it on occasion. Now, this year, they will take off with things like that. “

Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas is the only new face to have been added to Liverpool’s squad this summer.

The Reds are strongly linked to players like Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcántara, but Klopp continues to play his cards close to his chest.

At City, Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres have been acquired, with the promise of more to come.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also expected to return to the market before the next deadline passes, while Chelsea’s elaborate spending spree may not be over yet.
