Mali’s transitional president, Bah Ndaw, has appointed a 25-member government in which several key posts have been assigned to senior military personnel.
According to a presidential decree read on state television, the ministries of defense, security, territorial administration and national reconciliation must be led by colonels of the Malian army.
Ndaw, who had a career in the air force, was chosen to be the country’s president by the coup leader.
Following the subsequent appointment of a civilian prime minister, the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, is expected to soon lift the sanctions it imposed after the August coup.
Colonel Sadio Camara, one of the junta leaders, will become Defense Minister, while the military junta spokesman, Colonel Maj Ismaël Wagué, will be in charge of national reconciliation.
Some important positions were also for civilians with the former prosecutor, Mohamed Sidda Dicko, at the head of the justice department.
Only four posts were assigned to women and only two to members of the opposition, M5, the group that led the protests against President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta that led to his removal by the military.
