Ishmael Ashitey, a former Greater Accra regional minister, has asked the government to make a budget allocation for the regional minister’s office.
Lamenting the lack of control that regional ministers have over money delegated to local government, Mr. Ashitey stated that they often do not have the funds necessary to implement their ideas.
“The regional administration must have a budget. Sometimes you may have good ideas but you don’t have the money to execute them. So we should look at the system one more time and design it in such a way that the regional minister can take care of the region and design it the way he wants. “
He argued that the allocation of the revenue collected at the assembly level is determined by the assembly members without consulting the Regional Minister’s office, adding that it is time for the government to review its administrative system.
“Today it is the assemblies that are working, they are capable of collecting income and the assembly members in their meetings make decisions about how the income should be distributed.
“So, as a regional minister, you will be sitting in Accra and you will not have any control over how the revenue is actually used in the various assemblies. the assembly, I think it doesn’t look good, ”he said.
Ishmael Ashitey also wants the government to complete the stalled Greater Accra regional minister residency project started by then-regional minister Nii Armah Ashitey, which has been at the foundation level for several years.
“The Regional Minister’s residence is not a place where someone can stay. Fortunately for us, Nii Armah Ashitey started a project to erect another building, but it is still at the foundation level. I have discussed it with him and with the finance minister to follow up so that we can get a place for the regional minister to stay. Currently it is not in the best shape, the wood used is rotten ”.
