The activist of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yayra Koku, has expressed his surprise at the conduct of the member of the Central Parliament of Assin, Kennedy Agyapong, during the election of the president of the parliament, saying that he should be appointed president of the Peace Council by his peaceful conduct during the rather spiteful and violent process that led to the election of Alban Bagbin of the NDC as Speaker of the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
Mr Agyapong, considered aggressive by many, has regularly sparked fights with others, but in the House of Parliament during the controversial election of the president, Mr Agyapong was surprisingly committed to calming down and talking to his fellow MPs about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) side out of the clashes.
Kennedy Agyapong was too quiet. I still do not understand. Is it the case that he is a coward and can only speak on TV / Radio or is he no longer the Ken that we all know him to be?
“The last time I heard him on TV, he said that the NDC members are behaving like they are the only MEN in this country, so I was hoping that he would confront them in parliament, but that he was more of the peacemaker. Congratulations to peacemaker Kennedy Agyapong. May he be the president of the peace council, “Yayra Koku said on social media.
Kennedy Agyapong, a longtime New Patriotic Party (PNP) deputy, has been praised by many for behaving honorably in Parliament, even when others engaged in violent exchanges and even open fights.
Election of Alban Bagbin as President
In the early hours of January 7, 2020, Alban Bagbin was elected president, winning against the PNP candidate, Professor Mike Oquaye.
Both the NPP and NDC have 137 MP each. But the independent deputy from Fomena had said that he was going to vote with the PNP. Therefore, the NPP expected Professor Mike Oquaye to win the speaker position.
Surprisingly, after the rather controversial election, Alban Bagbin got 138 votes beating Professor Mike Oquaye, who got 136 votes. A vote was spoiled.
