Non-partisan political and social lobby group OccupyGhana says former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu’s main challenge was maintaining a healthy interaction with the executive arm of the government while performing his duties.
According to the group, Martin Amidu could not find a balance when it came to having a healthy relationship with the Executive and asserting the independence of his position whenever he felt he was being challenged.
“We believe that the main challenge had to do with its interaction with the Executive in its most recent corruption risk assessment report.” a press release from OccupyGhana and seen by JoyNews read.
According to the statement, “Without commenting on the merits or not of the matters in disagreement, we believe that the executive backsliding in the work of all independent constitutional or statutory bodies is to be expected.”
Hence, the group warned that instead of Mr. Martin Amidu having resigned, the “best option was to deceive the Executive, about his report of risk of corruption and affirm independence while standing firm and proceeding with his mandate.”
According to OccupyGhana, the Special Prosecutor handed over his independence to the Executive upon resigning.
They expressed their disappointment at both the resignation of Martín Amidu and the subsequent acceptance by the Presidency.
