John Dramani Mahama promised on Thursday to pay Menzgold’s top blocked clients if he is elected president of Ghana in the December 7 election.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) closed the gold concession company in 2018.
The company traded collectible gold with guaranteed returns to clients, which is, in essence, trading securities without the necessary license or disclosures authorized by the Commission.
Described by many financial analysts as the biggest scam in Ghana’s financial history, more than $ 6 million of top funds were locked in after the shutdown.
Mahama, who is the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), promised to alleviate the sufferings of the clients of the defunct firm.
Speaking on Accra-based Power FM on Thursday, December 3, 2020, the former president said that if someone invested, for example, GHS1000 before the collapse of the company, his management would refund him.
“… If we can’t pay the interest, at least the GHS1000, the government should be able to fix it. Because they are Ghanaians, it is the duty of the state to protect them, ”he said.
Injured clients of the firm pledged to vote for the former president.
Earlier this year, the disputed gold distribution company began repaying its clients’ blocked funds only to halt the exercise with days.
The suspension of the payment was due to the fact that the CEO of the defunct company was traumatized after the picket at his private residence by some of the aggrieved clients on Wednesday, January 8, 2020.

He said that despite the strenuous nature of the campaign due to the scourge of COVID-19, the feedback from constituencies was refreshing.
“He’s on the home stretch now. We have had a good campaign and I am quite satisfied. We have covered a lot of bases, ”Mahama told Joy News’s Emefa Apawu.
A series of polls published before the elections had ruled out any possibility of the former president and his party winning the elections.
