Mahama requires EC to publish the names of voters with faulty ID cards

Democratic National Congress (NDC) standard-bearer John Mahama has demanded that the Election Commission (EC) publish the names of people with faulty voter identification cards.

He said this will ensure a credible record and flawless electoral result in the December 7 elections.

Addressing the press in Accra on Thursday, he said: “I reiterate the EC Secretary General’s demand to publish the full names and details of people with faulty voter identification cards.”

Mr. Mahama emphasized that the deletion, duplication and lack of data on people, including his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Mensah, is a threat to the country’s democracy.

“The sheer volume of anomalies in this year’s voter screening exercise is unusual and unprecedented and gives us genuine cause for concern about the credibility of the exercise and the integrity of the electoral process,” he said.

The NDC has raised concerns that the EC will not disclose the issue it faces, but wait until the elections are around the corner to start doing things anyway.

The former president said that he awaits the Electoral Commission’s response to the questions he sent to his office.

The pending questions are:

  1. When did it come to the EC’s attention that some of the voter identification cards issued to registrants during the recent voter registration exercise had duplicate identification numbers and were therefore defective?

2. Why didn’t the EC inform the political parties that are the main stakeholders in our electoral process in a spirit of fairness and transparency and in line with our established electoral practice?

According to him, the acceptable practice was to inform the political parties to deploy agents to monitor any such process in accordance with electoral laws and conventions.
