The presidential candidate of the Democratic National Congress (NDC), Mr. John Dramani Mahama, has questioned the prudence of the government in providing dams that are not fit for the purpose of its One Village One Dam promise.
He says that instead of the government building dams as promised to the people of Ghana, it has resorted to providing pirogues that are unsuitable for agriculture throughout the year because they dry out or in some cases cannot hold water.
Addressing a separate durbar of chiefs and people in Loggu and Manwe in the Wa East constituency as part of his four-day tour of the Upper West region, Mahama said that government dams are as touted as shelters that they are not suitable for irrigation purposes.
“In 2016, when the nuclear power plant came with the promise of a dam in a village, I personally asked them what kind of dams they were talking about because there are different types of dams but they refused to answer.”
Mr. Mahama’s observation is consistent with the findings of a recent investigation by the Ghana Peasant Farmers Association that about 90 percent of the dams built under the government’s One Village One Dam initiative cannot be used for irrigation.
This means that nine out of ten of the government’s dams are not fit for purpose. Mr. Mahama assured the people that the next NDC government will build adequate irrigation dams to support their agricultural activities throughout the year.
Therefore, he urged them to join the NDC and vote for him on December 7, 2020, to enable his next government to provide jobs, development projects and good leadership for all Ghanaians.
