The presidential candidate for the Democratic National Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has joined many in calling for the removal of the law prohibiting the importation of salvage cars.
According to the NDC standard-bearer, a sudden decision by the government to suspend implementation of the law on November 1, 2020 is a political stunt.
The country’s car dealers, presenting themselves as the Ghana Automobile Dealers Union, have said that the implementation of the law would lead to job losses.
Echoing Mahama’s sentiments, car dealers say that the rapid U-turn in the implementation of the law to ban the importation of salvage vehicles and vehicles into the country for more than 10 years is only to allow Nana Akufo- Addo win votes.
Minority members of Parliament have also called on Ghanaians to ignore the suspension of the law.
Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu said the suspension is propaganda because the government has no power to suspend the law.
Speaking during an interview on Woezor TV on September 20, 2020, Mahama urged car dealers to pressure the government until the law is repealed.
“I tell car dealers and others who will be affected that it is not a suspension. Parliament returns in October. The government should go back to Parliament and amend the Customs Amendment Act and remove that clause. That is what the government should do. It is not enough to suspend it.
“It means that in the future they can implement the law again and then what they must insist on is that the law be amended and that clause be eliminated to show that it will not be implemented in the future. Suspension is a gimmick. It was supposed to start on November 1, so they suspended it so that they (the car dealers) can vote for them and then implement it after the elections, ”said Mahama.
The 2020 Customs Amendment Act provides incentives for car manufacturers and assemblers registered with the Ghana Car Manufacturers Program and prohibits the importation of salvaged motor vehicles and cars older than 10 years into Ghana.
Implementation of the law was suspended last week.
