Mahama Ayariga, a central deputy from Bawku, wants the retirement age of civil servants and judicial officials to be increased from 60 to 65 years.
According to him, he is sponsoring a private member’s bill to amend the constitution to achieve his goal.
Mahama Ayariga during the background investigation of Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the appointed Minister of Employment and Labor Relations explained:
“Many people start family life late and their children, for the most part, are still in school when they retire compulsory and family income is negatively affected, with serious consequences for the education of their children. An extended retirement age will guarantee that young people have a guaranteed family income to support their education.
“With improved health care and increased life expectancy, the current mandatory retirement age of 60 harms the public service and the judiciary and deprives them of healthy, competent and experienced people. And many of them they live twenty years or more and become a burden on the pension plan that has to support them in retirement when they could actually work. “
Ayariga then asked if the candidate will support an amendment to the constitution to extend the retirement age.
Baffour-Awuah replied in the affirmative, but stated that the concerns of young job seekers must be considered.
He said that “a national dialogue is being promoted on the issue of the extension of the mandatory retirement age to build a national consensus on the matter.”
