Some workers working with the construction company in charge of the Pokuase exchange have condemned the Akufo-Addo-led government for overseeing what they have described as unfair treatment of them.
In an attempt to put their displeasure on record, they have threatened to vote against the ruling party in the upcoming December elections.
According to them, government officials have not addressed their concerns and have refused to speak or grant them an audience each time they visit the construction site.
Workers at the site, on Thursday, October 22, 2020, demonstrated demanding an increase in daily wages that is currently set at GH ¢ 20.20 with an allocation of GH ¢ 1.00.
While chanting the electoral slogan of former President John Dramani Mahama, they lamented his poor pay structure.
“Mahama afa, 2020 Mahama afa …”, they sang in harmony; which translates as “Mahama has won”.
Speaking in an exclusive interaction with GhanaWeb, a scaffold at the construction site denounced “our main problem is that we need a pay increase. They have taken us all as day laborers, but I am not a day laborer, I am a scaffolding but they all pay us GH ¢ 20.20p.
We work 8 hours and we get GH ¢ 20.20py we don’t even have insurance. When it rains, it is deducted from the working day. How? This is a great exchange, so we ask the government to help us. We have sent several requests to management, but no one is paying attention to our request. The consultants came when they heard about our demonstration. “
Another who works in the carpentry department added that apart from the paltry sum they are given after a day’s work, there is no insurance coverage in case of accidents.
“Our Chinese supervisors are taking the workers here at Pokuase Interchange for fools. Even when you take a break to visit the bathroom, you are penalized. When it rains, they discount us and mark us absent, he regretted ”.
They also complained of appalling mistreatment by their Chinese supervisors who are in charge of the project.
All of these grievances, along with several others, according to them, have forced them to reject the government led by Akufo-Addo.
