Luka Modric has reached an agreement in principle to extend his contract at Real Madrid beyond its current expiration date of June 2021.

The Croatian international will renew his contract for one more year – until June 30, 2022 – at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

When this extended contract expires at the end of next season, the midfielder will have completed a decade as a Real Madrid player following his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.

During his eight and a half years in the Spanish capital, Modric has won four Champions League titles and two LaLiga Santander titles, among other trophies, as well as the Ballon d’Or on an individual level.

Modric’s performances in recent months, plus the leadership and experience he brings to the squad, have convinced the club to keep him a while longer.

Even in recent weeks, the 35-year-old has presented show after show in the middle of the park for Los Blancos, reaffirming his worth for Zinedine Zidane.

MARCA had previously reported that Modric was willing to accept a pay cut to stay at Real Madrid. Your new contract won’t pay as well as your current one.

In recent months, the Croatian has received a number of offers from elsewhere, including lucrative ones from Qatar, as well as from the MLS.

However, Modric’s intention has always been to stay at Real Madrid. He is currently the oldest player on the first team roster, but his displays are among the best.

Also, there is the value of playing soccer at the highest level in terms of being fit for major international tournaments.

Euro 2020 was expected to be the veteran’s final bow with Croatia, but its postponement until 2021 and the proximity to the World Cup in 2022 suggests a different outcome.
