Luis Suárez was the man who was supposed to lead Atlético de Madrid’s comeback in the Champions League.
But, in the end, Los Rojiblancos left the competition without scoring a single goal in their round of 16 tie against Chelsea.
And it wasn’t that they were close, with limited scoring opportunities on both legs and Suarez as the main culprit.
It wasn’t just Chelsea that Suarez couldn’t score either, as the Uruguayan exited the competition without a single goal in nearly 500 minutes of action.
Although the 34-year-old has 18 goals in LaLiga Santander this season, which helped Atleti reach the top of the standings, he was unable to replicate that form in Europe’s premier club competition. In fact, it is the first time in his career that he has gone blank in a Champions League campaign.
There have also been 25 straight away games in which Suárez has failed to score in the competition, the first striker to hold that dubious ‘record’.
Despite his poor performance against Thomas Tuchel’s Blues, it was still a surprise when Diego Simeone decided to take Suarez out when he needed two goals.
The former Barcelona player gave an ironic smile when he saw his number go up, and he was undoubtedly angry at being taken out of the fray.
However, Suarez wasn’t solely responsible for Los Rojiblancos’ lack of scoring on Wednesday, with Moussa Dembélé and Ángel Correa contributing just as little from the bench.
Joao Félix was arguably the best of Simeone’s forwards on display, at least trying to find a goal, even if he didn’t make it in the end.
