Luis Suárez has detailed how ‘he spent days crying’ after being expelled from Barcelona this summer.

The 33-year-old, who was told by phone by new boss Ronald Koeman that it would not be in his plans, secured a transfer for LaLiga rival Atlético de Madrid in a £ 5.5 million move.

But a departure from the Camp Nou was emotional and Suárez admits that he “didn’t take it very well” when told to find a new club.

“It’s difficult because it was a mixture of emotions,” Suárez told the Uruguayan channel AUF TV.

“ Obviously when the club told me they were looking for a fresh start, I didn’t take it too well for the way they did. You have to accept it when a cycle comes to an end.

‘I spent days crying about the situation I was going through [after] how much I had enjoyed it, how much they valued me as a player, how much they loved me, how I felt the warmth of the club that gave me a thousand incredible moments.

‘My wife was the one who saw that I was upset, that she had seen me with her head down and what she wanted was to see me laugh and happy in a field again. She let me make the decision and seeing the possibility of Atlético, I did not hesitate for a second.

Suárez was linked to a move to Italian champion Juventus before joining Atletico de Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital.

He made an immediate impression on Simeone’s side last month, scoring two goals and claiming an assist on his Atlético debut in a 6-1 rout of Granada.

Suarez’s departure was heavily criticized, especially by his close friend and Barcelona captain Lionel Messi.

Messi’s outburst regarding Suarez came after the Argentine’s summer transfer saga as he sought to activate a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for free, ending a nearly two-decade stint with the club.

Suarez and Messi had formed a formidable partnership both on and off the pitch since arriving from Liverpool in 2014, helping the club win the 2015 Champions League title and four LaLiga titles.

“I wasn’t surprised by Messi because I know him too well, he knew the pain he was feeling, as I did,” Suarez said after Uruguay’s 2-1 win against Chile on Thursday, in which he scored a penalty in the first half.

“ He felt like they kicked me out of the club because of the forms. There were other ways to do things right with me. It was six long years and that also bothered him. I see him as a friend and he knows how much we suffer.

‘My family wanted to see me happy. There are some strange things in Barcelona like sending you to train separately because they didn’t consider you for the game. ‘
