Luis Suárez accused of cheating in Italian exam

Luis Suárez has been accused of cheating on an Italian language test that he had to pass to seal a transfer from Barcelona to Juventus earlier this month.

The Uruguayan forward appeared to be about to move to Turin and attempted to obtain an Italian passport through his wife, who is an Italian citizen.

That would have allowed him to be registered as a citizen of the European Union and therefore would not have counted towards Juve’s non-EU quota.

He traveled to Perugia, where he passed the necessary assessment, but the authorities are now investigating alleged irregularities in his examination.

“During the investigations, irregularities arose in the examination of Luis Suárez to obtain Italian citizenship,” reads a statement from the Perugia Prosecutor’s Office and the Guardia di Finanza.

“From the research activities it emerged that the topics covered by the exam had been agreed in advance and that the score had been assigned before the exam, and that the candidate had demonstrated only an elementary knowledge of the Italian language.

“Today the financial police are making documentary acquisitions at the University of Perugia aimed at confirming the described conduct and reporting crimes of disclosure of office secrets, ideological falsification committed by public officials and more.”

With the move to Juve seemingly collapsed, Suárez is now heavily tied to a move to Atlético de Madrid, but recent reports have suggested the transfer could be in jeopardy, and Barca expects to charge a fee for his services.

Meanwhile, Juve have moved to re-sign Alvaro Morata from Atlético de Madrid, while also being strongly linked to a move by Roma star Edin Dzeko.
