Barcelona have started racing in the Champions League with two wins in two games, but Dynamo Kyiv manager Mircea Lucescu doesn’t think the Blaugrana have what it takes to win the European trophy this season.
The Catalan team already has six points in the group stage and a new victory at the Camp Nou against the Ukrainian team will bring them one step closer to taking first place and qualifying for the round of 16.
“After the game against Bayern Munich it was understandable that Barcelona looked to make changes,” Lucescu told a pre-game press conference. “They have a squad with very talented players, but they need time to learn the mechanics.
“I don’t think Barcelona is up to winning the Champions League at the moment. Bayern Munich, Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain have more options.
“In any case, they have a footballer in Lionel Messi, who can be very important. A new coach needs a minimum of six months and in the spring they will be another team.
“Barcelona is a team that is better playing the Champions League than LaLiga Santander, because in the domestic competition the other rivals know them very well.”
Dynamo Kyiv traveled to Catalonia without 13 players, nine of whom have contracted coronavirus. Although the rest of his men tested negative for COVID-19, Lucescu would prefer that the game against Barcelona be postponed.
“It was difficult to wait five hours for the results, but thank God all the players are healthy,” Lucescu added. “We will play the game tomorrow and, in the end, that is what matters.
“In the team we expected the tests to be negative, but the problem is in tomorrow’s game. As a coach I would have liked the game to have been played another day, but you have to accept it.
“Maybe it would have been better if a test had come out positive and then the game could have been played another day [laughs]. “
