The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) says the sport has a real chance of returning in December if they meet government-required COVID-9 guidelines.
GBA Secretary General Patrick Johnson said the association had written letters to the National Sports Authority (NSA) outlining some possible dates for a return to competitive boxing this month.
The GBA canceled a scheduled fight last Sunday due to the promoters’ inability to comply with the government’s COVID-19 guidelines in time before the fight.
The fight, organized by ACE Power Promotions in collaboration with Box Office Sports Promotions, was expected to herald the return of the sport in the COVID-19 era.
Johnson revealed to Graphic Sports that he said his team was considering three different dates in December for the sport to return since the suspension of sporting activities last March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He noted that the GBA executive was waiting for the NSA to give them the green light on what date to accept in accordance with agreed COVID-19 guidelines.
“We had to cancel the scheduled fight due to the promoter’s inability to comply with COVID-19 guidelines prior to the fight,” Johnson said.
“The promoters sent us a short notice for the fight, but as you know, we are not in normal times and we have to meet certain criteria before organizing a fight. This cannot happen at the time of the fight.
“As it stands now, realistically boxing can only return in December and we are considering three different dates that have yet to be confirmed by the NSA,” he added.
