Marcos Llorente does not regret leaving Real Madrid for Atlético de Madrid, where he has gone on to shine with Diego Simeone.
Since then, Simeone has turned Llorente from midfielder into second forward, and that has seen him play at an unprecedented level.
“I was very clear that I had to go,” Llorente said in an interview with the Deportista Club. “When Atleti’s offer came, I didn’t hesitate.
“Now things are going very, very well for me. I’m happy about that.
“When a player wins minutes, he grows. He becomes a better player, and that is what is happening to me now.”
The number 14 enjoys working with Simeone and operating in his new role, but even he couldn’t have predicted his change in position.
“If you had told me a year ago, I would have told you that you were crazy,” Llorente said about the idea of his change. “I’ve been a midfielder most of my life, and also a defensive player.
“The coach told me about it a long time ago, he told me that one day he would stay, that he thought it would benefit the team. So we did it at Anfield, and after the quarantine I stayed there.”
That night at Anfield marked a change in Llorente’s career, and it was a night he will never forget, having scored two goals to knock out European and Premier League champions Liverpool.
“Anfield was the most magical night of my career,” Llorente recalled. “It was my best game, for all that it brought.
“Winning at Anfield, going through the tie against the European champions. Doing it all together, with all the hard work and struggles of the team, we made it through.”
His form at Atlético de Madrid has led Luis Enrique to include him in his plans for Spain, with the versatile midfielder and forward who made his international debut this season.
“It’s a goal that you always have,” Llorente said about the representation of his country. “Even if you don’t always think about it. It has come at a very good time in my career.
“I will always remember the day I got the call and the day I debuted.
“But what is important is more than what is coming, but let him stay and that is achieved by working, working and working.
“Luis Enrique is very clear about what he wants and is forming a team with many alternatives to achieve it.”
