Freddie Ljungberg is confident that Nicolas Pepe “will do well” at Arsenal despite his recent troubles.
Pepe received much criticism after he was sent off during Arsenal’s draw against Leeds last weekend for head-butting Ezgjan Alioski.
The winger has struggled to stay consistent since joining Arsenal from Lille in the summer of 2019 for a club record fee of £ 72 million.
However, Ljungberg, who worked with Pepe last season, believes the 25-year-old can be a success for Arsenal.
Ljungberg stressed that it is important that Pepe is not criticized too harshly for his mistakes.
Ljungberg told The Athletic: ‘I think Nico will come in handy. Nico wants to work. Every player makes mistakes. They sent me off at the Spurs!
Don’t kill them too much because it happens to all of us.
“ The important thing is how they react afterwards and if he ducks down, he works even harder and still tries to prove himself. He hasn’t had the best time, there’s a lot of focus on him.
‘He could say easy things like’ Yes, he needs playtime. ‘ Okay, but there are also many other players who need playing time. That’s the difficult thing. ‘
Pepe recovered from his foul against Leeds by scoring in Arsenal’s Europa League victory against Molde.
The Ivory Coast international has produced several brilliant moments for Arsenal, but they often find themselves on the periphery of matches.
In total, Pepe has 12 goals and 12 assists for Arsenal in 56 appearances, while helping the Gunners win the FA Cup last season.
Pepe will be suspended for Arsenal’s next three Premier League games, but will still be able to play Rapid Vienna in the Europa League next week.
He will hope to be able to return to the starting lineup when he becomes available, although there is competition from the likes of Willian and Reiss Nelson.
