Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to win his fitness career for Liverpool’s Community Shield meeting with Arsenal this afternoon.
The defender missed the Reds’ preseason training camp in Austria this summer as a result of what was described as a minor injury complaint.
Instead, he remained in Merseyside to pursue a tailor-made fitness program designed to prepare him for this weekend’s visit to Wembley Stadium.
AND StandardSport He understands that, barring news of a setback suffered in Friday’s training sessions, Alexander-Arnold will be part of the squad to face Mikel Arteta’s men this afternoon.
He will be joined by Virgil van Dijk, who suffered a deep cut over his eye during Liverpool’s last friendly, a 2-2 draw with RB Salzburg, but is in line to start.
However, Jurgen Klopp will be denied the services of several players who missed the preseason due to fitness problems.
Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson and Divock Origi will not travel to the capital this weekend.
But Klopp remained optimistic about his progress, revealing that a number could return in time for the start of the Premier League season.
He said: “All the guys who weren’t involved until now or were lightly beaten in the preseason will not be available for tomorrow, but [are] getting closer, really closer, closer and closer.
“So hopefully most of them can start training in a completely normal way after the game against Arsenal, but this game is now too early for them. Maybe one or two involved in the team, we have to see.
“That’s it. Hendo and Joel [Matip] looking really good, in a good way.
“Ox, early stages but okay. Shaq, okay. Trent, very close, we have a decision to make about tomorrow. Harry. [Wilson] looks good.”
Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Keita, Salah, Firmino, Mane
