For the first time in years, England’s two most successful clubs face off as true title contenders, and defending champions Liverpool are looking to regain top spot.
That’s because United rose to the top with a 1-0 win over Burnley in the middle of the week thanks to an attack by Paul Pogba, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have a three-point lead before this meeting.
Jurgen Klopp’s team has better goal difference, so victory will see them overtake United, but more than that, the victor will make an important statement as the season nears the middle of its run.
Date, start time and place
Liverpool vs Manchester United is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 pm on Sunday January 17, 2021.
The game will be played behind closed doors at Anfield due to current coronavirus restrictions.
How to watch Liverpool vs Man United
Television channel: The game will be televised on Sky Sports.
Live broadcast: Sky Sports subscribers will be able to watch the game online via the Sky Go website or app.
Liverpool will be without midfielder Naby Keita, who has been out since mid-December due to a muscle problem.
“Naby is not involved,” Jurgen Klopp said. “Right now we have alternatives in midfield, so we really try to give him all the time he needs to be 100 percent fit and not compete on Sunday.”
However, the German could have Joel Matip available, reporting that he is “close” to a comeback and would be tested in training later this week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, meanwhile, will be late calling Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and Anthony Martial, the latter pair taking hits against Burnley and the former being completely missed.
“I’ll give everyone tomorrow too to show their fitness,” said the Norwegian. “To get a chance to go to that game. There are a couple of hits we took at Burnley that I’m not sure about.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Man United
Liverpool have become used to winning these decisive matches when their status as favorites for the title has been the subject of discussion, such as when they beat Tottenham earlier this season.
They have also had the benefit of a bye week and it will be hard to beat them at Anfield here.
