It has been an incredible few days for Liverpool Football Club.
For the second summer in a row, it seemed that Jurgen Klopp’s team would not make any major signings.
Konstantinos Tsimikas came in for £ 11 million, but it will be nothing more than a cover for Andy Robertson.
When they lost Timo Werner’s goal to Chelsea, then watched Frank Lampard’s team and Manchester City grow stronger, Kopites was starting to get frustrated.
But then, weeks of reporting linking them to the signing of Thiago ended with the official confirmation that the Spanish midfielder had signed for the Premier League champions.
While Liverpool fans were busy singing ‘Cuba’ by the Gibson Brothers, they would have heard the news that they were also interested in signing Diogo Jota from the Wolves.
Less than 24 hours later, they announced that they had signed the Portuguese forward for a deal that could amount to £ 45 million.
Who saw that coming?
In all the excitement, Liverpool fans can be forgiven for forgetting that they have a great Premier League game against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
It is unclear if Klopp will call Thiago for the trip to Stamford Bridge, although it is believed they completed the required paperwork on time. Jota is unlikely to be available.
How Liverpool can align with Thiago and Jota
But when both are ready, how will Liverpool line up?
You’d imagine Thiago would be a regular starter, but how can 23-year-old Jota have an outing ahead of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino?
Well, while the former Wolves man may have to accept a supporting role this season, there is a way Klopp can get his two new signings into the starting lineup.
The last five are selected with Alisson behind a defense by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
While we generally see Klopp operate with three central midfielders, we are modifying it slightly with Fabinho and Thiago together. Obviously that means the absence of captain Jordan Henderson but, depending on the opposition, he can replace Fabinho.
Then come the four forwards: Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.
The four would be very fluid in terms of their position, but we believe that keeping Firmino in his current role is essential, more than playing as an attacking midfielder. There are arguments that the Brazilian does not score enough goals, but the way he immerses himself in that role of false nine would allow the other three to run after him.
Having Mane in the role of attacking midfielder may seem strange at first, but we think it would be perfect for him. As Firmino sinks deep, he will leave plenty of space behind him that Mane can explode into. The Senegalese is also fantastic at collecting the ball and beating defenders. Doing that from a central position will allow you more room to go left or right.
Then we have Salah in his usual position on the right and Jota in his familiar role on the left.
It may not be something Klopp does right away, but don’t be surprised to see this system in some games against weaker opponents this season. Then next season, don’t be surprised to see that it is used more regularly.
