Neville praises Alisson
Gary Neville believes Liverpool stopper Alisson Becker is now far superior to Manchester City’s Ederson after being named to their 2020 team of the year.
Neville hailed Alisson as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League “by a mile” and highlighted his value to Jurgen Klopp’s team.
He told Sky Sports Monday night football program:
“Better by a mile. Ederson was outstanding for a few seasons, but he has dropped, his standards have dropped in the last 12 months.
“Alisson, we have said it for several years, we were very tough with the goalkeepers.
“When you play in front of an outstanding goalkeeper, the difference he makes is off the scale. From a good goalkeeper to a great goalkeeper, it cannot be quantified.
“Alisson does it week after week. At Crystal Palace, Liverpool were by far the best team, but there was a period where Alisson makes a stop, when if that comes in, things can change.
“He makes save after save, good decision after good decision, he makes the fewest mistakes, which is the key, and he gives total security and authority to everyone else on that team.
“It is the most difficult position on the pitch, but for a first-rate team that is going to win the League or the Champions League, I don’t know how it can be achieved without having an incredible goalkeeper and he is an incredible goalkeeper.
“They went from number two in the Champions League, from number two or three in the Premier League without him, to number one. They were never going to win the league with previous goalkeepers, never in a million years.
“That’s 8, 10 and 15 points, honestly. You only know that when a goalkeeper makes a mistake, the impact he has on defense is catastrophic and only increases nervousness. He is a brilliant goalkeeper ”.
